Winter Construction

Saturday was the first day working on our home that it actually felt like winter construction. I blasted snow out of the holes in the concrete while Matt rotated the threaded rods into their epoxy bases. Meanwhile the boys made a beeline for the snow covered hill Matt built up with a skid steer loader. Soon they were playing “King of the Mountain”, that is boyish for I’ll throw or push or wrestle anyone who tries to take my place at the peak of this hill. When we called for everyone to load up, four of the five boys ran up covered in mud but with such satisfied smiles on their faces that I couldn’t find in my heart to begrudge their messy fun, even as it transferred to the van upholstery. We’re making memories and feeling more connected to the land with every visit and sometimes that looks like rolling in the mud.
