The Well

Water is essential for life. Before the location of the house could be confirmed we needed to make sure we had access to water. We measured out the location and waited for drilling day.

Drilling day arrived and the big rig showed up. The boys were in awe of the size of it. We spoke to the driller about the location and he said we would need to move the well 120 ft away from where we plan to have the septic field so we moved it from the north side of the house to the south side.

Based on other wells the driller completed in the area, he thought it would be around 120 feet deep. At 110 feet there was no signs of water yet so we kept on drilling. 150 feet down there were trickles, deeper yet. After a few days the driller had to stock up on more pipe and the final depth of the well came to 270 feet. It is not the gushing well we were hoping for but it is a water source right close to our house. At least we won’t have to make trips to the water hole everyday like Penny and Jody (The Yearling). The well has three water sources along its depth and looks like it is going to produce around three gallons per minute in total. We might have to get creative with water usage if we are going to avoid a cistern. The good news is we have water! The spot we had picked out for the house is going to work.
