Beam Raising

Before the beams could get raised on the house there was a lot of prep work to be done. They needed to be cut to the right size and sanded down to a nice smooth finish. This alone doesn’t sound too bad but factor in moving the 29 big heavy beams around to do this and it becomes quite the job. Unload the beams off the trailer, move to saw horses to cut and sand, move off saw horses to make room for the next beam. By the time they are lifted onto the house each beam will have to be moved four times each. Thus the pic of exhausted Royall after finishing the sanding. With the help of an occasional little boy wanting to try out the orbital sander, Royall tackled the sanding herself.

Royall and I could lift the beams and move them around ourselves but we knew we were going to need help to get them on top of the walls of the house. After some recruitment leading up to the beam raising day, we ended up getting awesome helpers. The kind that not only jump right in the action but have building experience and make the whole process a lot smoother. It was a fun day and we can’t thank the people that came out and helped enough.
