Good
The Good Land. If something is described in the scriptures as good it has the ability to progress. I came across this idea in Allen J. Fletcher’s book “A Scriptural Discussion of Light”. The way he words it is things that are good are “light + light” which is his way of describing progression in the sense that as we add light into our lives we slowly but surely grow brighter and brighter until the perfect day (D&C 50:24, Proverbs 4:18).
Here are a few scriptures that gave me better understanding of the word good when it is substituted for “the ability to progress”.
Moses 2
31 And I, God, saw everything that I had made, and, behold, all things which I had made were very good
Moses 3
18 And I, the Lord God, said unto mine Only Begotten, that it was not good that the man should be alone
Abraham 3
23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
D&C 111
11 I will order all things for your good, as fast as ye are able to receive them
Helaman 12
4 and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men
Jacob 5
36 Nevertheless, I know that the roots are good
Progression can be symbolized as physically moving higher. Our prophet often uses the words “higher and holier”. This symbolism is seen in the design of our local temple as you progress higher and higher through the rooms. Temples are good as they are buildings of progression that shine forth adding light to the world and our lives.
Royall and I noticed as we have moved our family to different locations that we have always moved higher, closer and closer to the mountains. We have definitely not planned it this way but as it turns out each home was built on a little higher ground.
Our first apartment when we were going to school – 482m elevation
My first professional job out of school – 645m elevation
My Second Job – 910m elevation
New house in nearby town – 960m elevation
Move to rental home as a base for building the new house – 1130m elevation
Good Land – 1305m elevation
Progression is our goal. We plan to work together with the land in our progression and help it live up to its name of The Good Land. As we build up the property it will progress into a home and bring forth fruit. The process of this helping us to progress as a family, in knowledge, in character, in light, and as Children of God.
God is good.
Moses 1
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory — to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
