Window Day

Just a couple weeks ago Royall said “We should rent a scissor lift to install the windows.” As soon as I heard it, it was like the last piece of the puzzle slipped into place and I knew it was what we needed to get the job done. A few minutes later I had the scissor lift rental booked and put out a message to friends and family to come for a “window installation party” in a couple weeks. We were going to attempt to install all the windows in one day.

It helps to have a deadline to work to. There was a lot of window prep to do and we needed to have it done before people showed up ready to work. We had some house wrap to finish up and we needed to prep the window sills with a piece of beveled siding and a waterproof sill pan. I recommend this stuff for the sill. It stretches around the bottom corners so it is one seamless piece and is fast and easy to install.

Testing out the scissor lift the day before the crew comes

On the days we invite people to come help it is amazing that we seem to get just the right people we need to get the job done. We had so many great people show up to come help. After the first window got installed we were off to the races.

The inside crew passed the windows out to the outside crew and then lined up the windows perfectly before we screwed them in place on the outside. A lot of experience in this group, with installing windows and anything else you can imagine.

Our house has 18 windows not including the skylights and with our big crew we installed all of them in just under 4 hours. It was so satisfying to fill the big holes in the framing up with beautiful windows. No more wind rushing through the house or cleaning up snow before the start of a work day.

The other part of the window party was playing with cousins. Russ even cooked up the most delectable brisket to celebrate the occasion.
